Home Remodeling and Design for Future Needs
Each and every one of us will grow old someday and if we do not want to move to a senior facility, then we better be looking for ways on how we can make our homes safer and conducive to long-term independence. One of the disadvantages of modern home designs is that it tends to be inappropriate to live in for the senior citizens. To get our money’s worth, we should adopt a design that has a long-term approach. Every time we get an itch to do some home remodeling in any area of the house, we must make sure that the new design can be our ally in our quest for long-term independence.
We should go a bit further with our planning each time there is something to change or improve in our homes. For example, we want to replace our front walkway because it’s starting to break up and the path becomes uneven to walk on. Instead of just beautifying or simply repairing it, we should think of ways on how we can make it safer and more convenient for everyone who will use it. In that way, we are truly investing on something that can be useful to us. Having a gentle slope in our walk will eliminate the need to have steps which are more strenuous.
Plus, this design does not cost much like other home improvement plans. The slope will look like it was a part of the original design of the walkway. When the time comes, we would no longer need to have a wheelchair ramp installed. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone. We get the chance to replace our walkway and we also get to plan ahead for our future. This is indeed a good investment because if we opted to get steps, then we also need to have railings installed. And not just any railing will do. It should be long and firm enough for us to use as a support while climbing up or down the steps. Having inadequate railings or no railings at all for our steps is like welcoming an accident to happen.
When we grow old, accessibility is one important thing for us. The elimination of steps is not only beneficial for those who use wheelchairs because it just simply makes things easier for everyone. For example, we can roll our luggage right from the living room to our car. It would also be a convenience if we could put our groceries into a small cart and wheel them right into the kitchen. This is about mobility for everything, not just wheelchairs. The next thing that we should consider is our halls. Are they easy to navigate? Also, is our floor covering appropriate for us to move around freely? Many homes have very narrow hallways and cramped hallways which make it difficult for us to move up and about. We must also avoid having deeply padded carpets because we could easily trip on them. Slippery floors and throw rugs are also a big no-no.
