Things To Know In Classy Exterior French Doors

French doors are doors that open to the backyard garden or patio. They are commonly used to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces in modern homes that have enough room for an outdoor area. The exterior French patio door can be made of fiberglass, metal, or wood. The material used for making external French doors depends on the area where you live. Those who live near the beach cannot use metal doors since the salt air will make the material rust faster. Areas where rain is prominent cannot have wooden doors because the water seeps into the material and causes the wood to bend, twist, or break over time. For houses that are subjected to such harsh weather and elements, the best material to use is fiberglass. Fiberglass is extremely durable and does not rust, flake or break due to the weather. Another great advantage of fiberglass is that it can imitate just any material used in making French doors. Most exterior French patio doors have tiny windows or lites in them. These windows can be installed separately into the door or frame or pre-installed as one large glass and separated by pieces of wood, steel or fiberglass to give the illusion of being separated.

There are three types of French doors currently being sold in today’s market. Knowing these variants may help you narrow you search down a little. Modern homes today usually prefer the style of sliding doors. These doors are sold and packaged individual and must be assembled by an expert on the site. It can be made of steel, reinforced aluminum, wood or vinyl. Aluminum sliding doors are common, the least expensive and the most durable of the lot. Two panel aluminum sliding doors are the preferred choice of many modern homes. In the set-up, one door is permanently fixed, while the other one is able to slide. Two panel doors will have a latch on the indoor area for added security. There are some houses that employ four panel doors where the two doors in the center are fixed, and the ones on the sides are able to slide. The last type of French door is the swinging variety. These doors are quite wide and offer better security than sliding doors. The swinging doors are definitely more inviting than the sliding doors as both doors can be opened at the same time.

Additional accessories can be installed on or over the French doors for aesthetics. The outdoor part of the door can have sidelights installed on either side so those on the outside are able to find their way back into the house. Arched exteriors can give the door the illusion of added height and space.
